About the museum
The Museum of the 2 nd Session of the AVNOJ
The Museum of the 2 nd Session of the AVNOJ was founded in 1953 as a central
Yugoslav museum institution of the memorial type. During the war in Bosnia and
Herzegovina, the building where the session was held was devastated, and the museum's
materials, except for a few items, were stolen.
In September 2002, the Commission for the
Preservation of National Monuments declared the AVNOJ House a national monument of
Bosnia and Herzegovina to which the function of the AVNOJ museum should be returned.
Public Institution "Museum of the 2 nd session of AVNOJ" was founded in 2007. After
the partial renovation of the building and renovation of the exhibition, the museum was
reopened to visitors on 29 th of November 2008. It is one of the most visited museums in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, with an annual visit of around 20,000 visitors.
Building renovation
Renovation and significance of the museum
Since its establishment, the Public Institution "Museum of the 2 nd Session of the
AVNOJ" has been involved in the implementation of the project "Renovation of the building
and settings of the Museum of the Second Session of the AVNOJ", which was previously
started by a committee (established for this purpose), whose composition included
representatives of non-governmental organizations from Jajce and representatives of
SUBNOR (alliance of the anti-fascist organizations of WWII) from the former Yugoslav
republics (members of the main committees and museum workers). The project, whose value
was 450,000.00 KM, was mainly financed by the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the FBiH.
Other participants were: the Main Board of SUBNOR of Slovenia, the Government of
Montenegro, the Ministry of Education and Culture of the RS, the Ministry of Spatial
Planning of the FBiH and the Municipality of Jajce. The project has been successfully
implemented, only some works on the renovation and decoration of the interior of the
building remained.
On the basis of preserved photographs, memoirs and preserved items, an ambient
reconstruction of the memorial hall where the Session was held in 1943 was done. The new
permanent exhibition emphasizes and highlights the basic features and distinguishing
characteristics of the anti-fascist movement in Yugoslavia compared to anti-fascist
movements in other countries. A special place is occupied by the Decisions of the Second
Session of AVNOJ and their historical significance.
With the great efforts of the employees, a fund of museum items, documents,
photographs and works of art is being successfully created and restored. A specialized library
with a reading room was renovated and arranged. The library collection contains about 3,000
different titles of books and magazines.
We realized the project "Virtual Museum of the 2 nd session of AVNOJ", the value of
which is 26,957.50 KM. This project was financially supported by the Government of FBiH
(Federal Ministry of Environment and Tourism and Federal Ministry of Culture and Sports) in
the amount of 20,000.00 KM.
In the last week of November, for the past five years, the Public Institution "Museum
of the 2 nd Session of AVNOJ" organized the event "Days of AVNOJ in Jajce". On average,
between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors attend the event. Visitors come from many cities in Bosnia
and Herzegovina, but also from places outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, mostly from Slovenia
and Croatia.
Days of AVNOJ " attract exceptional media attention. A large number of journalists
and photojournalists gathered in Jajce on those days. Reports on the event are published by
almost all printed and electronic media in Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as a large number
from the wider region.
